Homemade leather conditioner

Leather is a natural material from animals that can dry out and crack if neglected. It is therefore necessary to recondition it by protecting it and nourishing it with oils lost through evaparation.

Although the conditioner can be bought easily, you can control what chemicals go into the conditioner by making it yourself at home and cheaply.

The ingredients are very simple and easily available. They are natural beeswax, Cocoa butter, vegetable oil such as Coconut oil which is more commonly used. Other alternative oils can be used depending on availability.

The beeswax form a protective waterproof layer after application on the leather while the remainder two materials act to modify the consistency of the resultant conditioner.

The ratio by weight are 1:1:2 of Beeswax:Cocoa butter:Coconut oil. Using 3 parts of liquid Coconut oil will result in a softer paste and can be used if it it fits your application.

To make this conditioner, use a double boiling method by boiling a pot of water in which another container is used to hold the wax and oils. This will prevent over heating that may result in a fire.

The beeswax is melted first, onto which is added the Cocoa butter and followed by the Coconut oil. the mixture is stirred continuously until everything is melted and mixed. it is then poured into a shallow container to set at room temperature.

This conditioner can be used to condition your wife's precious Louis Vuitton Vachetta leather handbag with her Highness's permission. However, I disclaim all responsibility should there be a darkening of the patina. It will leave all leather handbags in a beautiful sheen and make the bag last longer. Caveat: I am assuming the bag had been properly cleaned before the application of the conditioner. This is a separate subject on its own.

Other applications are leather shoes, belts and wallets.
